After coming to an opinion that film screenings are no more a profitable business in current times with a hit ratio of less than 10 percent, most of the exhibitors in the Telangana region have been shutting down the theatres in the recent past. The hike in land rates, especially in the rural areas, has been prompting the exhibitors to sell the land or convert the theatres to godowns or function halls.
Out of the 1600-odd theatres in AP, Nizam territory consists of around 600 screens and it is also the major revenue source for Tollywood films. It came to the notice of Telangana film chamber that nearly 50 theatres have been closed permanently and another 125 screens were temporarily shut down in the past few months.
Telangana film chamber secretary Muralimohan explains the situation by saying while the land cost of the theatre is around Rs 15 crore in rural areas, the exhibitors would be making just Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh per month through the screening of films.
If the situation continues to be the same, the theatres count might fall drastically which eventually have a big impact on the Box Office returns. Only quality films could change the mind set of the exhibitors who are in financial crisis.
