They are privileged, elite, and live in comfort. They take their celebrity status for granted, and expect the common folk to show them the deference they think they deserve. Most often than not this attitude places them on the wrong side of the law. Who are the celebrities who, in their arrogance, have been in the news lately for all the wrong reasons? Take a look.
Hyderabad’s reputation of being a bad party destination took a severe beating on Sunday, June 9, when Allu Sirish got embroiled in a pub brawl. A female videographer, who came in to shoot Mumbai DJ Ma Faiza’s birthday gig, was attacked by a group of revellers accompanying a 'powerful person'. DJ Faiza claimed it was Allu Sirish.
Allu Sirish denied the accusations and claimed he was nowhere near that pub. But DJ Faiza sent this photograph to the Hyderabad police the next day. The photo shows Allu Sirish talking to her.
In what can be called sheer arrogance, Ram Charan Teja's security staff beat up a couple of software engineers near Banjara Hills in Hyderabad early May, for blocking his car from taking a free left turn at a signal.
The techies, Phanish who was driving and his friend Kalyan, were driving a Maruti Alto. Despite sounding the horn repeatedly, the Maruti did not give way. Ram Charan reportedly got down from his car and shouted at the techies.
After the traffic cleared, Ram Charan moved his car a few metres away, and reportedly called his security guards on the phone. Six of his security guards dressed in safari suits reached the spot and beat the techies up, Phanish alleged. The matter was later settled out of court.
When Bollywood starlet Jiah Khan killed herself, the blame squarely fell on her boyfriend Suraj Pancholi, son of Aditya Pancholi, for allegedly abetting her suicide. Suraj has been held and remanded to police custody till June 13. Was it the arrogance that comes with being a celebrity (or a celebrity's son, in this case) that made Suraj behave callously with Jiah?
Soon after Jiah’s death, the police found out that she had made several phone calls and texted Sooraj all through Monday. She had also spent the weekend with him. She had made her last phone call around 10.53 pm to him before committing suicide.
According to Sooraj, he never met her, but Jiah’s mother Rabia suspects that he hit her on the jaw, which pushed her over the edge. A few days after Jiah’s suicide, her mother and sisters found a 6-page letter written by her. The letter mentions the 'deep hurt' 25-year-old Jiah felt at having to abort her baby with Sooraj and reflects the rocky relationship she had with him.
Saif Ali Khan has a history of losing his cool in public places. He was arrested early in 2012 with Bilal Amrohi and Shakeel Ladak, for assaulting NRI businessman Iqbal Sharma at the Wasabi Restaurant at the Taj Mahal Hotel.
Saif was dining with Kareena and a few friends and were creating a ruckus. Sharma, who was also dining there, requested them to keep their voices down, but this did not go down well with Saif, who allegedly punched Sharma, breaking his nose.
The second incident occurred when Saif used the VIP lounge at Lucknow airport. According to some sources, Saif was asked to vacate the VIP lounge, as he was not entitled to the facilities. Saif refused to comply and started an argument with the security guards, which soon led to a fight. The brawl came to an end with the intervention of senior officials of the airport.
Shahrukh Khan is infamous for his smoking habit. He was found violating the public smoking laws at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium in Jaipur last year during a cricket match of his IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders. The case was settled when Shahrukh Khan pleaded ‘guilty’ of smoking and was asked to pay a fine of Rs.100.
Shah Rukh, who was a co-owner of Kolkata Knight Riders, allegedly misbehaved with a security guard and officials in March 2012 after the match. SRK and his posse of bodyguards had allegedly gone up to the teams' dressing room and then come down and stepped on to the ground. The brawl started when security personnel told him that he couldn't step on to the ground as the match was over.
It was said that SRK was drunk at the time, and the Mumbai Cricket Association then banned him from entering the Wankhede Stadium for five years.
Salman Khan is infamous in Indian courthouses for his repeated visits. In 2002, he was accused in a hit-and-run case that caused the death of a man sleeping on the pavement.
Salman was also remanded to police custody on charges of poaching the endangered Chinkara, but was released on bail.
When Hrithik Roshan visited Shirdi with his family in May 2010 just before the release of 'Kites', he was mobbed by the media. Hrithik soon lost his cool, and yelled at the journalists surrounding him for having invaded his family's privacy. He had to be restrained by father Rakesh Roshan. Hrithik regretted the incident later and tweeted, 'Right now I’m trying to forgive myself for loosing my cool.'
In 2008, Govinda alleged slapped a man, Santosh Rai, on the sets of the film ‘Money Hai to Honey Hain’. The man framed charges against Govinda on the grounds of assault. A summons was issued to the actor, who failed appear in court. The case is still pending and has now been adjourned to April 24 when trial is expected to commence.
Kannada actor Darshan’s abusive tendencies were aired publicly for all to see in 2011. The actor’s wife filed a complaint against him citing physical, mental and emotional abuse throughout her marriage and pregnancy to Darshan. Much to the disgust of many, the actor was acquitted.
Suniel Shetty became embroiled in a controversy when Puran Chauhan, a stuntman, filed a case against him blaming the actor of threatening him over the phone, and not paying him any money for his services while shooting the movie 'The Little God Father' in 2007. The Delhi High Court granted 'absolute' stay on the criminal proceedings against Suniel Shetty in the case.
Singer Mika Singh found himself in hot water when he planted a surprise kiss on the feisty Rakhi Sawant.
Rakhi didn’t take the forced kiss lying down; she filed a molestation suit against Mika, claiming he kissed her against her wishes.
Visiting the Ajmer Sharif dargah before the release of a new film has become a ritual for Katrina Kaif. She was embroiled in a controversy, when she wore a short skirt during her visit to Ajmer Sharif in 2007, to shoot a scene for 'Namaste London'.
She seemed to have learned her lesson, though, when she was seen in salwar kameezes and burqas in a couple of subsequent visits to the dargah. The last time she visited, just before the release of 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan', Katrina even went so far as to dress in an all-black outfit, with her head covered with a black cloth.
Nandamuri Balakrishna was involved in a shooting controversy. The incident took place on 3 June 2004 around 20:50 hrs at his residence in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad. The actor has allegedly fired shots at producer Bellamkonda Suresh and his associate, Satyanarayana Chowdhary. Later both the wounded were admitted into Apollo hospital.
